The new imperialism essays During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the United States built a solid empire and gradually transformed into an imperialist nation. Throughout this period of time, the U.S. grew into a zenith global power and ruthlessly dominated weaker nations economically, politically, culturally, and militarily. As the American empire pursued new territory and pushed for foreign business markets, U.S. naval bases, and the spread of American culture and society, many countries began to feel occupied by the United States relentless force. The U.S. intervention and annexation of Hawaii and the Philippine Islands in the 1890s is a prime example of Americas persistent jingoist policies of aggression and force during Americas generation of the new imperialism. On May 4, 1898, United States Congress introduced a joint resolution calling for the annexation of Hawaii. At the time, William Mckinley was President of the U.S. and he supported and encouraged the taking over of Hawaii for economic and political expansion reasons. Mckinley and his administration vaguely argued that the annexation of Hawaii was necessary because it would not only provide security and order to Hawaiian inhabitants but that it would also reinstate the liberal constitution issued to Hawaii in 1887. This liberal constitution had been replaced by Queen Liliuokalani to give her extensive personal power. Did that make it right and essential for the U.S. to intervene? Of course not; as a matter of fact, the Queens new constitution was favored by the Hawaiian people and most of them did not want American annexation of their territory. SBA Offers Online 8(a) Program Application The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has unveiled a new electronic online application process that will make it easier, faster and less expensive for small businesses to apply for 8(a) Business Development and Small Disadvantaged Business certification. The 8(a) Business Development Program is a business assistance program for small disadvantaged businesses. The 8(a) Program offers a wide range of assistance to firms that are owned and controlled at least 51% by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals. Benefits of 8(a) Certification Small businesses that gain SBA 8(a) program certification can compete for and get sole-source government contracts worth up to $4 million for goods and services and $6.5 million for manufacturing. 8(a) certified firms may also from joint ventures and teams to bid on government contracts. â€Å"This enhances the ability of 8(a) firms to perform larger prime contracts and overcome the effects of contract bundling, the combining of two or more contracts together into one large contract,† notes the SBA. These transgressions from normative gender roles are frequently employed by filmmakers to examine the complexity and fluidity of modern masculinity and femininity. The roots of these explorations can be seen as far back as 1959’s Some Like it Hot, but only in the 1990’s were directors able to use these sliding identities to their fullest extent. By examining Billy Wilder’s, Neil Jordan’s and Kimberley Peirce’s use of external gender signs, gender roles, sex and sexuality in Some Like it Hot, The Crying Game and Boys Don’t Cry, respectively, we may see the progression of gender blending from comedic device towards accepted identity. The Crying Game stumbles into stereotype and limits Dil’s sexual behaviour, and even the most progressive of the three, Boys Don’t Cry, shows Brandon dying a horrible death. However, Peirce’s film has come a long way in open-mindedness since the antics of Joe and Jerry in Some Like it Hot.
